physical education

Our Vision:

At Ashford Oaks Primary School, we aim to encourage the children to be fit and healthy. Pupils are taught the importance of how an active mind creates an active brain, which will then lead to a better mind-set that is focussed and ready for learning. Pupils are given opportunities to try new sports, improve their co-ordination and develop a number of skills which inevitably help with everyday life.

Our Aims:

We aim to teach the children to:

  • Develop positive attitudes to participation in physical activity; including when competing in tournaments/ games against other children.

  • Make informed decisions about the importance of exercise in their lives so that they lead a healthy and active life.

  • Acquire and develop skills, performing with increasing competence and confidence, in a range of physical activities and contexts.

Objectives:

All children have the right to develop their skills and progress in PE and this can be achieved through specific targets for their age group.

In KS1 we teach the children to:

  • Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities.

  • Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.

  • Perform dances using simple movement patterns.

In KS2 we develop these objectives further and teach the children to:

  • Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination.

  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.

  • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.

  • Perform dances using a range of movement patterns.

  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.

  • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Overview of PE at AO, and the positive impact that the sports funding is having

At Ashford Oaks we provide engaging PE lessons that show clear differentiation over the course of each topic in order to suit the needs of each child. Children are exposed to a wide range of sporting activities throughout the year and are beginning to have more of a say on the types of activities that they would like to cover. Our PE curriculum offers a wide range of topics, exposing our children to new skills and challenges. We are fully committed to ensuring that children are given  100+ minutes of PE a week. We attend a local private school for swimming lessons (Year 4 & 5), giving our children the best opportunity to become confident swimmers.

PE at Ashford Oaks has continued to grow in stature, both in PE lessons and when attending sporting events. Children have taken great pride when representing Ashford Oaks in Sports competitions. Teachers continue to work closely with the sports lead (Tom Scorer) to provide engaging PE lessons that show clear differentiation over the course of the topic, to suit every child’s needs.

Move & Groove still continues to be a huge part of a weekly routine. Move and Groove is a whole school initiative, that allows children and adults to come together.
